My house is wired with cat5. Using your diagram, I wired a cat5 plug where an existing phone jack was and hooked it to my router with an ethernet cable. In another room, I added a cat5 plug like you showed, and connected my computer to it. It isn't getting any network signal. Using a multimeter I verified that there is in fact continuity on all 4 wires and that they are are wired the same (T568A configuration) Is there something I'm missing?

Excellent reading. Thanks for posting it! I love the way you have all those connections mounted in one small area like that. Great job! I'm in the process of wiring up my home also. If possible, could you add to this article a wiring diagram that starts at the wall plate to show where everything gets hooked up? Again, great reading!

Bill, you do need to come out of a router or workgroup switch to feed each one of your computers. Look on your router and see if one of the jacks is marked "uplink". That's the one that will feed another switch for you.

I have split my CAT5 to two wall jacks in each room the rj45 jacks are wired orange to orange, orange white to orange white, green to green and green white to green white. I have the cables terminated at a punch down board in a cable box. when I hook up my computer I get the following pop up: A network cable is unplugged. Do I need to go through a hub in the cable box to make this work or should it work just using a punch down block. I only want to be able to plug in my laptop in different rooms I am not creating a network between computers.
NOTE: the phone connections work fine. Also I have high speed internet through my cable company the signal runs from my modem into a wireless router (with 4 wired ports). I have a line going from the router to the wall jack- through the punch block - down to a wall jack in another room. If I go direct with a cable from the router to my laptop the connection and internet work fine. Where am I going wrong.
Thanks

Just wanted to thank you for this great article. With little to no hardware knowledge or experience, I was able to follow your instructions to add a 100mbs wired network to all the rooms in my home. Thanks a bunch!
