Ignore that posting above. Although the centre two wires ( 4-5, blue/white and blue) are not used in cat5 and can be used for phone, the next outer pair (3-6) cannot because 6 is part of the ethernet group. Here is a setup which works. Cat5 takes 123--6-- and the telephone takes ---45-78. See image at http://www.bajama.mine.nu/~barry/phone-cat5a.JPG
This line carries 100 Mb across 100m with phone line as well.

Hi, I am in the middle of setting up the phone/cat5 combination. As I understand it the Cat5 will use the outside 4 wires (grwh-gr-x-x-x-x-brwh-br) and the phone can use the middle 4 wires (x-x-blwh-bl-orwh-or-x-x). So this means that a patch Cat5 cable with only four wires should work for the ethernet. My problem is that I have a 100 meter House-shed connection using Cat5. On each end I separate the phone wires out by using a 50cm custom patch cable. But when I divide the wiring the same as you have (I used the cat5A color combination) the routers lose their connection-LED indication and the ethernet is not working. Do routers need those "phone" wires for something? I have a Netgear 10/100 8 port switch at one end and a TP-link WLAN router at the other end. The phone works at that distance and if I disconnect the phone and replace the patch cables with plain straight throuh cables (8 wires) then all is fine again. I check the cables with a lan tester - they seem to be OK although when the tester measures the 100m stretch the LEDs are not very bright.
I have uploaded a diagram of what I think I have to http://bajama.mine.nu/~barry/xfer/aaa.JPG - I wonder if anyone can see an error here? Meanwhile I will try a few other ideas and search for an answer. Thanks.

Great post. I have a similar post about making your own Ethernet cables. There are step-by-step pictures and a video. Let me know what you think: How To Make Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6 Ethernet Cables. I do disagree with the comment about 568A being the industry standard though. 99% of the data equipment we run into is wired 568b. That's what I used for my post. Thanks again

Very Good article but my RJ11 jack use blue and orange pairs and brown and green is available. Can I use these two available pairs to punch down in Cat 5e jack, if yes then what color lable of T568A I punch down. Meaning
Brown to ???, White/Brown to ????? and Green to ???, white/Green to ????.
Similarly which pin I'll punch down for onQ phone modules (Currently all four pairs are punch down in Phone module).
Which pin assignment I used in RJ45 Jack. color by color.

I'll appreciate all your help.

Thank in advance.

Great article! My problem is slightly different. I have the my house wired with cat5 and I love it. I have couple phone plugs thru the house but in my "tech box" in the basement there are cat5s input for those and I want to put plug in a Vonage device.

So basically I need a custom phone to cat5 - do you know how to do one ? Is there a standard or I have to look to see how the wiring was done ?

Thanks!

My house is wired with cat5. Using your diagram, I wired a cat5 plug where an existing phone jack was and hooked it to my router with an ethernet cable. In another room, I added a cat5 plug like you showed, and connected my computer to it. It isn't getting any network signal. Using a multimeter I verified that there is in fact continuity on all 4 wires and that they are are wired the same (T568A configuration) Is there something I'm missing?

Excellent reading. Thanks for posting it! I love the way you have all those connections mounted in one small area like that. Great job! I'm in the process of wiring up my home also. If possible, could you add to this article a wiring diagram that starts at the wall plate to show where everything gets hooked up? Again, great reading!

Bill, you do need to come out of a router or workgroup switch to feed each one of your computers. Look on your router and see if one of the jacks is marked "uplink". That's the one that will feed another switch for you.
