XBOX 360 HD-DVD, Will it Work In A PC?

I’m in the process of building a new state-of-the-art Windows Media Center (VISTA Beta) and the only missing link is a HD-DVD drive (I’m anti-Blu-Ray). So, with the recent announcement that Microsoft will be releasing an external HD-DVD drive for the XBOX360 makes me think that I could rip the HD-DVD drive out of the case and install it into my Media Center. I assume that the drive interface is standard ATAPI/IDE meaning it should work with Vista. The best part is that the drive should be priced less than $200. Does anyone think my idea won’t work?

Looks like a great idea! I was searching for a HD-DVD drive recently. It seems most tech stuff comes out for the computer first and cheapest, then consumer stuff (like normal dvd drives did) but HD DVD doesn’t seem to follow this trend.
When does it come out?
Have you posted your specs for a VISTA box? I am currently enjoying my MCE 05 machine I build a year ago, looking forward to cable card support in vista.

I’d perfer not to rip it out, but be able to just plug it in via USB and have it work (double duty).
If software is available for playback, this should be a great November.

I think Microsoft probably will have some sort of lock against connecting it to a PC especially in Vista (maybe wont allow it to be identified as proper hardware) and/or the connectors to the back might be done as with the old xbox, with redesigned powerconnector. They would atleast have some sort of prevention since it will be a few $100 cheaper than the other drives released in the same timeframe Though I hope not .
