Not having HD-capable hardware, I'm probably not AS qualified to speak on the subject. That being said, were I to choose a high-definition format, I would have gone with Blu-Ray just for the simple fact that it's included with the Playstation 3.
I think this simple fact, combined with the fact that HD-DVD was an add-on for the Xbox 360, turned it into a "who can sell more hardware, faster" race. Which, obviously, Sony won.
Now that they've finally gotten one of their proprietary formats (Beta, MiniDisc, Hi-MD, UMD all failed) into the wild, it will be interesting to see how much control they decide to exert over it. If they're smart (ha), they'll leave it alone like Philips did with DVD.

Yeah, I agree with you. I still think HD DVD is the better format, especially since this generation of formats should just be a transition to a download distribution system.
The whole player profiles thing for Blu-ray is a major pain, and I guarantee as Blu-ray is more widely adopted, a major confusion point for consumer.
