I'm a Canon guy myself, but the micro-for-thirds cameras, especially the highly rated CF1, can compete with the Canon's or Nikon's. Check out DPReview's Review of the CF1... they Highly Recommend it! (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/PanasonicGF1/)

I had bad experience with Lumix camera (FX-35). Comparing with Canon S60 and IXUS 870IS it has worse picture quality. Sure the FX35 is not the same as CF1. But still ;)

I'd also suggest the GF1 which is very similar, uses the same micro four thirds lens system and is much more compact!
