Filmscreen Aspect Ratio Screen Masking Controller

I have made huge progress on my filmscreen masking controller. The PIC code, complete with independent controls/sensors for the top and bottom masking is done. The system has been working accurately for a few days now, but I still need to be 100% sure it’s perfect, so a little more testing is required before I finalize on the PC design. The current board design allows for 4 presets, 1.78:1, 1.85:1 (which is very close to 1.78:1) and 2.35.1. My screen masking goes up to 2.60, but I have yet to find a movie that sports that aspect.
Next steps are getting final boards made which will enable control via ethernet, RF as well as adding curtain control so the masking control can happen before the curtains open (or vice-versa) or controlled independently. If you are interested in my masking controller feel free to contact me.
Here are a few more photos of the prototype board for your viewing pleasure:

You’re one crazy mofo!
Let me know when they come out with wireless transmission of HDTV OK? I need it for my ancient house.
TV,
hahahah… we’ll when I’m all done with the new boards… we can talk. It should be pretty easy to setup yourself.

Thanks for the reply.. again great looking job. I’m a technical person (a ‘Code Monkey’ as my wife calls me), but I’d have no idea how to do this.. I’d really love for some kind of instructions on what parts were used, settings, all that good stuff.
This is very interesting, both from the control and the roller part. I have a 10’ wide screen that I would love to mask, but only have limited space (about 2”) on either side of the frame by which to build a masking system. I’m thinking of some kind of roller system, but not sure how to make it work with that kind of space. Do you have something that describes how the system works mechanically?
Cheers!
Garry
Looks like you were just linked to on Hackaday.com
Nice project. It would be simpler if you just placed a piece of thin white tape on the reverse side edge of the masking cloth at the several locations (corresponding to the ratios) then used the photo emitter/sensor detect when to stop. I have a motorized masking on my screen and wanted to mask to be stop right against the edge of the film. Unfortunately, many movies when projected onto the screen don’t conform to the standard ratios so I ultimately went with a simple analog switch which controls up and down.
@ Garry: perhaps you could try mounting the mask/s on spring rolls, like a pull down window blind. Then, using a few small pullys on the far corners and a thin cable, pull the masks in or out with a remote mounted motor system.
The masks under tension from the spring rollers will retract as the motor lets out cable.
You could fit the motor anywhere out of sight, with only a few thin cables going to it.
