Energy Inc. has introduced their next generation of whole house energy monitoring, the TED 5000 Series. The system provides all the benefits of the TED 1000 (more here and here and here) series along with a new look and improved functionality. Featuring a sleek handheld display unit and the brand new Gateway component which allows you to view the data directly from a web browser without the need of the display unit. The Gateway component will also allow for easy integration into home automation systems or interfaces like Myro:Home!

DIY: Water Flow Meter For Monitoring Water Usage

I’m currently investigating what I need to get Water & Gas (Natural) monitoring added to my home. I already have Power via Energy Inc’s TED 1001 & Myro:Home. However, it would be nice to add Water & Gas to the mix so I can monitor and control its usage. Currently, I’m checking out different flow meters from Flow Monitors Inc. Anyone have any other brands that have an output that I could rig/modify/extend? The nice thing about the CoolPoint line is that they offer outputs that I can use to interface with my automation controller.

If you are looking for a Power Conditioner that is web enabled, then check out PS Audio’s PowerPlay 8000. This unit has a full web based control that not only allows you to power cycle (reboot) or turn on/off your devices but also monitor the health of the power to them. PowerPlay will report all of its status including THD, line voltage, current and everything you need to know about the quality of your AC power, tracked daily and available on your own custom web page. The PowerPlay 8000 also features multiple IR commands, scheduled vacation times, event logging and even email alerts! The unit retails for $999 and is available now.

Blueline Innovations PowerCost Monitor

Last year I posted about a product called TED 1000, by The Energy Detective. It’s a power monitoring device that saved me $50 the first month of use. Blueline Innovations has released a similar device called the PowerCost Monitor. The PowerCost Monitor is a wireless device rather than wired like the TED and is about the size of a small digital clock which displays realtime power information. The system includes a sensor unit which attaches to the power meter itself.

The PowerCost Monitor sells for $150 which is about the same price as a TED 1000 ($144). I still prefer the TED 1000 because it can be hooked up to a computer or home automation system but don’t let that stop you from purchasing a PowerCost Monitor because whatever we can do to reduce power usage is good for everyone!
