It’s very interesting to see how reliant we have become on electricity. Everything I blog about needs it and without it, they are worthless chunks of plastic and metal. A powerful windstorm hit Seattle Thursday night and our power went out around 1:00am Friday morning. It was restored for about 30 minutes this morning (Sunday, 2:00am) but then a big bang took that joy away. I called up Puget Sound Energy (PSE) and they say it may take until Saturday to get our power back — I really hope not. Luckly, my parents live right around the corner and their power has been fully restored — that’s where I’m writting from.
At night, my wife and I have been sitting by the fireplace catching up on magazines, books, and playing cards. We look at all the technology in the house and realize that all this stuff really doesn’t matter, what’s most important is being warm and safe.
Ok, enough of that… The new HDCP graphics card arrived. Once the power is restored I’ll try it out with the HD DVD drive and post the results.

I still can't get used to that. Haha.
It seems like there are a lot of cases of neighborhoods having partial power... even in the same housing developments. Houses literally 50 feet from each other, one with power, one without. Luckily, all of you yuppie eastsiders are taking the brunt of the damage. Most of Seattle never even lost power. WEST-SYYYYYYYYYDE.

We just had a few little blips in my neighborhood in Seattle, though a few blocks away the power was out for a while.
Yesterday took our dog to Marymoor park, and on the way back, we got off 520 to get some lunch, only to realize that the power was out all around us. We got back on 520 and it seemed like the power was out most of the rest of the way through Bellevue. I kind of felt like I was fleeing a rapidly declining civilization.
Glad to hear you have a warm spot to retreat to.

Most every one I know has a backup generator, or a fireplace. Though up here if the power is out for more than a few hours it can be deadly. It warmed up to -9F today.

Being without power for more than 4 hours much is a humbling experience. I'm glad I moved off the Island before this happened.
There was a study done that showed significant increases in conception during natural disasters and extended periods of power outages. Which makes sense given your options in the dark.

Heh, funny enough, I was sitting in bed Sunday night / Monday morning and heard a huge explosion around 12:30 am or so. At the same time, my lights all dimmed. Possibly the same event.
