This is pretty intersting. However, this functionality is built into a new thermostat that HAI is coming out with at EHX in Mid March. Check it out:

The HAI thermostat looks cool, but it requires participation from your utility service for usage information.
TED works by directly measuring the draw on the utility lines coming into your service panel, so it should work for any utility.
It's very nice to be able to see real-time usage. The Footprints software is essential if you want to track your usage over time. This is a key element to any "smart" home automation system.

I have a TED 5000 installed and it works great.
It's shocking to see how much energy certain appliances use, like a clothes dryer.
