VIDEO REVIEW: Lantronix UBox 2100

Last month I wrote about the new Lantronix UBox 2100, a server which allows full control of USB devices over the network. The kind folks at Lantronix sent me a unit to review and for the last couple weeks I have been putting it through the tests. I’m happy to report that it’s everything Lantronix promised and I’m even going to purchase one for myself — it’s that good!

Yeah, I agree. Nice job on producing the video review. It was informative and offered great close up screen captures to see what you were talking about. Out of curiosity, which video editor did you use?

Hey Alexander,
I shot it with my old TRV950, mic was a wireless Sennhieser handheld, left on the counter (need to get a lavalier). Edited using Final Cut Pro on a mac.

Great video. Very informative.
Will this device allow me to connect a usb device on a separate remote lan? I’d like to install a remote camera in my cabin, and not have to leave a pc running. Without a pc running in that location, how would I determine the address of the box?

Nice review. I aswell look forward to seeing more of these types of videos on here. Very good how you had all these USB accessories that can be used with it to show. BTW cool piece of gear! The one with 2 ports would be nice to mount next to the door, one port for a USB camera and the other for the RFID reader.

John,
There is a way to connect to a UBOX server that is not directly on your lan. Keep in mind that you may experience network latency if you are outside of your local lan.
You would be able to find the IP of the box by plugging into the remote LAN (which is connect to a router) and then exposing the device on the internet via NAT. You would need a static IP.

Great video! I’m so glad to see that this works, as I’m looking to connect a printer and several usb storage devices.
Question: can you add more devices using a usb hub? I’ve been looking at Silex’s similar products: http://www.silexamerica.com/usb-device-servers-2.html
and they can be used with usb hubs (though they can’t handle webcams and the like.)
The Lantronix site didn’t say anything either way… so I hoped maybe you’d tried it?
